Singer Anthony Kiedis stated that when he first heard the song he thought of it as a B-side, however when people told him it was the best thing they were working on, he decided to make it a song. Due to an accidental leak the single was released three days earlier than expected to radio on July 15, 2011. On July 18 the digital download was made available and four days later the CD single was released. The song debuted at #38 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached number one on the Billboard Rock Songs chart.
